In 1934 the Treasury Section of Painting and Sculpture was established. The main function of “the Section”, as it was later to be known, was to select quality art to decorate walls of buildings with murals. Unlike the Mexican muralists, which inspired the movement, the Section murals were not to portray the economic or social conditions of the time. Instead, it was to depict historical and heroic acts. Although some of the murals of that period have fallen into disrepair or been destroyed, some have been restored.
I believe most artist today can appreciate good art wherever they see it. Murals have always fascinated me because they are so large and the ability to portray pictures with any sense of accuracy that big is a true talent. I’ve posted a couple of my brother’s (Lynn Burton) murals below. He has murals throughout Texas and Oklahoma in restaurant’s, lounges, and shopping malls.
