When I was a teenager, I learned to appreciate the paintings and bronze sculptures of the artist, Frederic Remington. There are very few people before or since that have been able to depict Cowboys and Indians as well as Remington.
He was born in 1861 and died in 1909, so he had the opportunity to study the west when it was still being settled, painting from life.
Remington made a specialty of painting and sculpting Indians, cowboys, soldiers, horses and other aspect of the Plains. His work is noted for its accuracy of detail and swift action.
The Remington Art Memorial, Ogdensburg, N.Y., displays an important collection of his paintings, illustrations, and bronzes.
I’m proud to have his bronze, “Bronco Buster”, on my shelf (pictured right).
