This movement began in 1918 and gave way to Surrealism in the mid 1920s. It was more inspired by ideology and a defiance to the world order at that time. It was not only a visual movement but a literary movement, as well. The use of shock was a key strategy for the Dadaist. Chance and the nonsensical were the key elements of the movement.
The Dadaist art movement constituted a refusal to develop a coherent theory. A perfect example of this was Jean (or Hans) Arp making collages by gluing pieces of paper wherever they fell. Another example was Marcel Duchamp’s, Fountain, which was an actual urinal which he signed R. Mutt, to make a commentary on the weight a signature has in the valuation of a work of art.
